Winner of the Wadsworth Prize for Business History, 1998. Very long scholarly history commissioned by the London firm from a leading historian. Deals with the history of the London house of N M Rothschild as well as that of the four associated houses in Europe and of the Rothschild banking family. Focuses especially on their finance of governments, railways and mining as a dominant international investment bank in the 19th century with very little on the post 1914 period. Structured in five parts in a broadly chronological sequence: 'Father and son'; 'Brothers' [1813-36]; 'Uncles and nephews' [1834-70]; 'Cousins' [1870-1914]; 'Descendants' [1915-45]
