Notes:
Provides transcriptions [pp33-319] of the travel journals, and associated notebooks, of J M Fisher, a merchant from Philadelphia who travelled in Britain and Northern Europe, 1775-79. His journals 'provide a fascinating insight into social and economic conditions in the British Isles at the beginning of industrialisation'. In them he recorded his observations on industrial plant and processes - notably in Liverpool, in Port Glasgow, at Plymouth Royal Naval Dockyard, at tin and copper mines in Cornwall, at Sheffield, at Manchester, at Birmingham, etc, etc. His reason for coming to Britain was to establish commercial relations with merchants and manufacturers which would be helpful for the family's Philadelphia business and so details of such businesses are recorded. Supported by extensive name, place, subject and commodity indexes
