Notes:
Provides a brief history of the industry in the nationalisation era to 2002 when the last deep Scottish coal mine closed, including 'Before nationalisation', 'Nationalisation and after' and 'Lady Victoria Colliery' [pp1-56], the latter providing 'an outstanding example of a model colliery dating from the late 19th century ...'. Much more notably, provides a gazetteer [pp57-268] of all Scottish coal mines in that period organised by county. Gives for each: location, previous owners, types of coal, time span, 'details in 1948' at time of nationalisation, 'other details', etc. Has a glossary of terms, an extensive bibliography, and appendices ordering collieries by previous owner, workforce size, year closed, etc
