Notes:
Deals with the Fenton family and with the Charlesworth family who succeeded them as very large Yorkshire coal mine operators, c1750-c1900. Not related as families but closely related economically. Largely based on secondary sources for want of primary sources. Fentons were in sharp decline by mid-19th century. Charlesworths operated for long as J & J Charlesworth, and from 1888, when incorporated, as J & J Charlesworth Ltd. See individual BHE entries. Has chapters: 'The Yorkshire coal trade'; 'The Fentons in coal'; 'The growth of the 'empire'; 'The life of the collier'; 'Non-colliery interests'; 'The Fentons in prosperity and decline';'The rise of the Charlesworths'; 'Years of change'. Includes family trees of the Charlesworth family descending from Joseph, d1822, and of the Fenton family descending from William, dc1675
