John Haslam, 1808-84, in 1822 entered the Derby China Factory to learn flower painting and came to specialise in figure painting and portraits for porcelain plaques. In 1835 he left and moved to London to start enamel / portrait work and from 1845 enjoyed royal patronage. 1857 he returned to Derby and no longer worked but set down his memories in a series of letters to the 'Derby Reporter'which were later piublished in book form, 1876
