Provides 20+ collected essays mostly on specific porcelain factories with a strong focus on their wares. The generalised essays include A R Mountfield, 'Porcelain comes to the Potteries - the pre-1760 period' [pp10-30] and Paul Attenbury, 'Staffordshire porcelain - the main developments after 1851' [pp327-38]. A further essay is F Celoria, 'Working and living conditions of nineteenth century potters in Staffordshire' with sections - 'Health hazards, 'Wages and conditions of employment', 'Women in the industry' and 'Housing'. A further essay appearing as an appendix covers 'The Staffordshire Potteries' [pp352-64] and deals with manufacture outside 'the modern city of Stoke', namely at Tunstall, Brownhills, Longport, Burslem, Cobridge, Hanley and Shelton, Stoke upon Trent and Fenton. A notable appendix provides a 'Checklist of Staffordshire porcelain manufacturers' [pp366-505] giving profiles of c800 factories, some very substantial and others very brief. This 'lists in alphabetical order the name (or names) and addresses of a multitude of Staffordshire potters or partnerships who are recorded as having produced, at least from a period, porcelains as well as standard earthenwares. To this basic information I have added the approximate working period of the concern, together with any other acts that are recorded'. There is also an appendix 'The Design Registration system' [pp507-34] which, inter alia, lists 'Post-1842 registered designs relating to Staffordshire porcelains, 1843-83'
