Notes:
Reproduces transcriptions of documents relating to the administration of dockyards, mostly held in Admiralty Papers in the National Archives along with others held in the National Maritime Museum. In editing this volume, the editor writes, 'my primary aim has been to illustrate the realities of the Navy's situation, emphasizing the most challenging administrative problems of the era and the means chosen to deal with them'. So far as Dockyards are concerned the text is 'strongly oriented towards problems of manpower. It stresses the management and behaviour of the workforce, not only to exhibit the problems and how they were solved but also to display to historians ... the nature of these materials for the Navy Board and dockyard records must certainly be the largest and richest source of information on eighteenth century work rules, work attitudes and labour relations'
