David Scott, 1746-1805, was a merchant at Mumbai from a young age, forming the agency house of Scott, Tate & Adamson. As a wealthy and influential merchant transferred to London in 1786 and in 1788, with political support, was appointed a [reforming] director of the East India Company, especially regarding its shipping operations
