Notes:
Memoirs of Captain Hilary Marquand largely comprising an account of his 14 sea voyages, 1839-51, the last three trading to the Caribbean/Brazil/England/Europe when he was a ship's captain. 'Relates accurately and in detail, its author's progress from cabin boy to captain during a decade falling towards the end of Guernsey as a shipowning centre'. Provides useful evidence of career progress in the merchant navy, what cargoes Channel Island ships were carrying in the 1840s and between which parts, and what life was like at sea. The memoir also sheds some light on Marquand's later career, 1867-72, as a shipbroker at Cardiff
