John Campbell, d1777, was Cashier of the Royal Bank of Scotland,1745-77, having formerly been Assistant Secretary in 1732 and Second Cashier in 1734. Joined the bank on its foundation. Parts of his diary were first published in 1881 and reprinted as 'Leaves from the Diary of John Campbell, an Edinburgh banker, in 1745', Scottish History Society Miscellaneous Volume, 1893. The present volume publishes the diary for Jan-Dec 1745, which contains much about his routine work, and which is preceded by an essay [pp1-27] by John Gibson in which he describes and analyses the diary at the time of political crisis in Scotland [Jacobite Rising]
