Notes:
Deals with a] the development of manufacturing industry, sector by sector, b] the macro environment in which it developed and c] the experience of labour and its organisation. Arranged in four periods: 1870-1914; 1914-39; 1939-1951; 1951-80. Each period is identically structured in three parts, viz: 1] 'British manufacturing and the economic environment'; 2] 'Old industries, new industries and managerial choices'; 3] 'Employees, trade unions and British manufacturing industry'. Each part is again structured very similarly so that it applies the same questions. The book is thereby written on a 'grid' pattern so that parts for a group of periods can be read together and independently of the rest
