Based on typescript in Dundee University Library, the original having been lost. Comprises extracts from the diary with extensive annotations. Deals with day to day management of the mill, especially its production, and was written for William Brown's personal guidance - 'to improve the author of them [ie the diary] in the knowledge of his business and to assist him in the management of it'. Arranged in following sections: 'Management' including notes to managers, instructions to under-manager, plan of management, night spinning, fire / insurance; 'Relation with employees; 'Improvements to East Mill'; 'Steam engine and machinery'; 'Visit to Leeds in 1821'
