Notes:
Provides an account of the life of Sir Alfred Edward Pease, 1857-1939, based on transcriptions from his diaries which survive in their entirety from 1880. Also draws upon the diaries of Alfred's father, Sir Joseph Whitwell Pease, 1828-1903, from 1856. Compiled by a grandson, b1927. Alfred was, in turn, 'banker, politician, big-game hunter, explorer and colonial administrator'. No substantial body of text relates to the Pease family's businesses but they are frequently touched upon as are later mining investments by Alfred in South Africa. Much of the text covers Alfred's life outside business - notably his travels and his later life in South Africa following the loss of his fortune. Touches on individual Pease businesses and family members, Robert Stephenson & Co Ltd, Owners of the Middlesbrough Estate Ltd
