Provides transcriptions of c170 letters, 1890-1924, of Sir Lionel Philipps, a senior director [sometime chairman] of Central Mining & Investment Corp Ltd, 1911-24, and previously a partner in Wernher, Beit & Co of London, 1898-1905, and in their agents at Johannesburg, H Eckstein & Co, 1893-96, 1906-10. The letters were sent by Phillips to senior people within his firms and to others closely associated with them. They provide details of the workings of the firms and of the South African gold and diamond extraction industries.
