Reproduces 127 letters, 1648-58, sent by John Paige in London mostly to one of his trading associates, William Clerke of Tenerife, Madrid, etc, and to his partner, Gowen Paynter in West Country. Held in National Archives, London, as exhibits in Chancery, and form part of a much larger collection. They deal especially with wine importation into London but also shed light on trading conditions, the mindset of a merchant, trading procedures, etc. Also relates to East India and America trades. Has introduction [ppix-xxxix] with sections: 'Origins of a London merchant'; 'Structure of trade with the Cararies'; 'Imbalance, regulation and war'; 'Dissolution'.
