'The purpose of this volume is to present the letters and orders entered into 25 letter books between 1774 and 1783 by the clerks in the resident Commissioner's office in Portsmouth Dockyard'. These relate to the administration of the Dockyard. The contents largely comprises 'Calendar of Portsmouth Dockyard Papers, 1774-83' [pp1-126] in ten sections including 'The labour force - shortcomings and overtime'; 'The labour force - pay and conditions'; 'Embezzlement and security'; 'Buildings and docks'; 'Refits and repairs'; 'Navigation and harbour craft'; 'Stores and contracts'. Otherwise there are ten appendix which contain summary information about the Dockyard and an introductory chapter [pp xvii-lxiv] with sections: 'The administrative structure'; 'The workings of the yard'; 'The manuscripts'
